A Drywall Calculator helps turn measured surface area into an estimated number of full boards. This page uses meters and square meters, then divides the total coverage area by the selected sheet area. Therefore, it is useful for an early material check before you request a supplier quote or prepare a detailed cutting plan.
The calculation covers one wall length multiplied by one wall height, plus an optional ceiling area. If several walls share the same height, you can add their lengths and enter the combined length. For example, the combined length of all four walls in a rectangular room is the room perimeter.
However, the output is not a full bill of materials. It does not calculate fasteners, adhesive, joint tape, joint compound, corner bead, framing, insulation, delivery, labor, or cost. It also does not arrange sheets on the surfaces. Use the total as a general quantity estimate and review the actual project with product instructions and a qualified installer.
What This Drywall Calculator Estimates
The Drywall Calculator reports five figures. First, it calculates wall area by multiplying the entered wall length by the wall height. Next, it adds any optional ceiling area to produce total area. It then divides total area by the selected sheet area and rounds upward to a full sheet.
After the base sheet count is found, the tool calculates 10% of that count and rounds the allowance upward to another full sheet. Finally, it adds the base sheets and waste sheets to produce Total Sheets Required.

Because two upward-rounding steps are used, the final allowance may be more than exactly 10% on small projects. For instance, 10% of four sheets is 0.4, but boards cannot be purchased as 0.4 of a sheet, so the tool displays one allowance sheet.
How to Use the Drywall Calculator
- Measure the wall length in meters.
- Measure the wall height in meters.
- Enter those numbers in the two required fields.
- Calculate the ceiling area separately and enter it in square meters if the ceiling will be boarded.
- Select the drywall sheet size you plan to buy.
- Select Calculate.

The wall length and wall height must be positive numbers. The ceiling field is optional and defaults to zero when left blank. Nevertheless, a negative ceiling value should not be used, even if a browser allows it to be typed.
Keep every length input in meters. If measurements are in centimeters, divide them by 100 before entering them. For example, 250 cm becomes 2.5 m. If measurements are in millimeters, divide by 1,000.
Drywall Calculator Formula
The Drywall Calculator uses the following equations:
Wall area = wall length × wall height
Total area = wall area + ceiling area
Base sheets = total area ÷ sheet area, rounded up
Allowance sheets = base sheets × 10%, rounded up
Total sheets = base sheets + allowance sheets
Rounding up is important because a partial answer cannot normally be purchased as a complete board. However, area division alone cannot predict every cut and joint. A layout with many small sections may need more material than a large uninterrupted rectangle of the same area.
Drywall Sheet Sizes Included in the Tool
1200 × 2400 mm sheet
This sheet is 1.2 m wide and 2.4 m long. Its face area is 2.88 m². It is often easier to move than longer boards, although actual product thickness, weight, edge type, and availability depend on the supplier.
1200 × 3000 mm sheet
This option is 1.2 m by 3.0 m and covers 3.60 m². A longer sheet can reduce some horizontal joints in suitable layouts. Nevertheless, access, handling space, framing direction, and worker safety must be considered.
1200 × 3600 mm sheet
This option is 1.2 m by 3.6 m and covers 4.32 m². It offers more face area per board, but it may be harder to transport and handle. Therefore, confirm that the selected size is stocked and can reach the installation area.
Sheet area does not include thickness. A 12.5 mm board and a 15 mm board with the same face dimensions cover the same area, but they may serve different systems. Always choose the board type, thickness, fire rating, moisture performance, and edge profile required by the project specification.
Drywall Calculator Example for One Wall
Assume a wall is 6 m long and 2.7 m high. The wall area is 6 × 2.7, which equals 16.2 m². No ceiling area is entered. If 1200 × 2400 mm sheets are selected, each sheet covers 2.88 m².
The base calculation is 16.2 ÷ 2.88, which equals 5.625. Since a fraction of a purchased sheet is not enough, the tool rounds up to six base sheets. Next, 10% of six is 0.6, which rounds up to one allowance sheet. The final result is seven sheets.
Drywall Sheet Calculator Example for a Room
Consider a rectangular room that is 5 m long, 4 m wide, and 2.8 m high. The four-wall perimeter is:
5 + 4 + 5 + 4 = 18 m
Enter 18 as Wall Length and 2.8 as Wall Height. The wall area is 50.4 m². If the ceiling also needs drywall, its area is 5 × 4, which equals 20 m². Therefore, enter 20 under Ceiling Area.
Total area becomes 70.4 m². With 1200 × 2400 mm sheets, the base result is 70.4 ÷ 2.88 = 24.44, rounded up to 25. The 10% allowance is 2.5, rounded up to three. As a result, the tool shows 28 total sheets.
This example assumes one common wall height and does not subtract doors or windows. Moreover, it does not account for how cuts from one wall might be reused on another. A detailed sheet layout may change the practical order quantity.
How to Measure Walls and Ceilings
Measure finished surface dimensions, not only a drawing label. First, measure each wall horizontally. Next, measure from the lower finished level to the upper coverage point. If walls have different heights, group equal-height walls or calculate the areas separately before combining them.
For a rectangular ceiling, multiply room length by room width. An L-shaped ceiling can be divided into rectangles, with each rectangle calculated separately. Then, add those areas and enter the total square meters in the optional ceiling field.
Sloped ceilings, bulkheads, columns, returns, dormers, and other irregular surfaces need separate measurements. Consequently, the simple wall-length field may not describe them well. Break the project into manageable rectangles and triangles, then prepare a manual area total or a detailed takeoff.
Measure twice before ordering. In addition, compare site measurements with drawings and confirm which surfaces are actually included. A room may have tiled areas, exposed masonry, built-in cabinets, glazing, or another finish that changes the coverage plan.
Should You Subtract Doors and Windows?
The current Drywall Calculator has no opening fields, so it does not directly subtract doors or windows. For small openings, keeping the full wall area can provide useful material for cuts and waste. However, a wall with large glazing, wide doors, or open sections may be substantially overstated.
If opening deductions matter, calculate gross wall area manually, subtract the area of large openings, and create a separate sheet layout. Do not try to enter a fake wall length unless you understand how that adjustment affects the rectangular assumption.
Even after subtracting an opening, material may still be needed around reveals, heads, sills, and returns. Therefore, area subtraction is only one part of a detailed takeoff. Installers may also plan joints so that board edges do not align with stress points at opening corners.
Understanding the 10% Sheet Allowance
A material allowance covers offcuts, damaged edges, cutting errors, unusable pieces, and layout inefficiency. The tool applies a fixed 10% to the rounded base sheet count. Then, it rounds that allowance upward to a complete sheet.
Ten percent is a general planning allowance, not a rule for every project. A simple room with full-height sheets and reusable offcuts may need less. Conversely, a small space with many corners, openings, short returns, or patterned cuts may need more.

Area Estimate Versus Sheet Layout
An area estimate answers “How many board areas fit into the surface area?” A sheet layout answers “How will full boards and cuts actually be placed?” The second question is more detailed because joint positions, framing centers, orientation, openings, and offcut reuse affect the plan.
For example, two surfaces can each cover 20 m² but need different numbers of boards. One may accept nearly full sheets, while the other may contain narrow sections that create unusable offcuts. Consequently, the calculator is best used for preliminary quantity planning rather than fabrication instructions.
A layout should also consider manufacturer guidance for board orientation, joint staggering, fastener spacing, edge support, expansion or control joints, and finishing. These details are outside the calculator’s input fields.

Drywall, Plasterboard, and Gypsum Board Terms
Different regions use different names. Drywall, plasterboard, gypsum board, wallboard, and gypsum panel may refer to similar board products, although brands and technical standards differ. Therefore, confirm the exact product named in your project specification.
The selected face size is only one property. Boards can differ in core formulation, paper or mat facing, edge shape, thickness, weight, moisture resistance, mold resistance, impact resistance, fire performance, and acoustic use. A quantity estimate cannot select the correct system.
Likewise, installation requirements vary among timber framing, metal framing, masonry linings, ceilings, shafts, wet areas, and rated assemblies. Use the relevant manufacturer literature and local requirements.
Common Drywall Estimating Mistakes
- Entering one room side instead of total wall length: add all included wall lengths when heights match.
- Mixing units: wall inputs use meters and ceiling input uses square meters.
- Forgetting the ceiling: add it only when it will receive drywall.
- Selecting an unavailable sheet: confirm local stock and access before ordering.
- Ignoring different wall heights: calculate separate groups when one height cannot represent all walls.
- Subtracting every small opening: this can remove useful cutting allowance.

Another mistake is counting both sides of a partition incorrectly. If both faces need board, each face contributes area. For a straight partition of length L and height H, two identical faces cover 2 × L × H before openings. Therefore, enter a combined wall length of 2L when the height is the same and both faces are included.
Planning Purchase, Delivery, and Storage
Before buying, compare the result with package quantities and supplier policies. Some products may be sold individually, in pairs, or by pallet. Also, check whether the selected board length fits through doors, stairs, elevators, and corridors.
Delivery and storage can affect damage rates. Boards generally need suitable support and protection from moisture, impact, and bending according to manufacturer instructions. Longer sheets may reduce joints but require more handling space and appropriate lifting methods.
Finally, confirm lead times for special boards. Fire-rated, moisture-resistant, acoustic, impact-resistant, or unusual-thickness products may not be stocked like standard wallboard. An early estimate helps with planning, but the final order should match the approved system.
